Xinhua News Agency, Lisbon, July 31st (Song Wei) – Portuguese Prime Minister Montenegro announced in a statement on July 31st that the government will consult with President D’Souza and various political parties in Parliament regarding the formal recognition of the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly this September.
In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, Montenegro stated that this move was made following the peace negotiations on the Palestinian issue and the high-level international conference on implementing the “Two States” solution. Under the framework of this conference, Portugal, along with other countries, re-examined the issue of recognizing the Palestinian state and its associated conditions.
The statement also mentioned that the conditions proposed by the Palestinian National Authority had been widely recognized by the participating countries, and the Portuguese government believes that the relevant conditions are now in place.
The high-level international conference on resolving the Palestinian issue and implementing the “Two States” solution took place from July 28th to 30th in New York, United Nations Headquarters, USA, during which a reevaluation of the recognition of the Palestinian state was conducted. Following the conference, foreign ministers from 15 countries, including Portugal, signed a joint statement, clearly indicating their consideration of officially recognizing the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly.
