On July 30th, local time, the World Athletics announced that starting from September 1, 2025, all female athletes participating in world ranking events (such as the World Championships) will need to undergo a genetic test. This test can confirm the athlete’s biological sex to ensure a more fair and transparent competition environment.
This life-long genetic test is conducted through oral swab or blood testing to determine the presence of the Y chromosome.
Athletes with a negative result (no Y chromosome) will be able to participate in women’s category world ranking events for an extended period; those with a positive result will not be allowed to compete in women’s category world ranking events.
It is reported that this new regulation will first be implemented at the Tokyo Track and Field World Championships, which opens on September 13th.
In a statement, Sebastian Coetzee, President of the World Athletics, stated that this move aims to “maintain the integrity of women’s sports” and ensure female athletes compete under fair conditions. (CCTV Zhu Xuesong)
