On July 31, local time, President Trump of the United States posted on his social media platform “Reality Social” that he had just spoken with the Mexican President. Trump stated that the complexity of reaching an agreement with Mexico differs from other countries’ agreements, where they agreed to extend the bilateral agreement for 90 days, meaning Mexico will continue to pay 25% in Fentanyl tariffs, 25% in automobile tariffs, and 50% in steel, aluminum, and copper tariffs.
Furthermore, Mexico has agreed to immediately cancel many non-tariff trade barriers it has set up. The United States will engage with Mexico over the next 90 days to aim for a trade agreement within this period or longer. Both sides will continue to cooperate on various aspects of border security, including drug trafficking, as well as illegal immigration issues. (Wu Hanying)
