According to the Islamic Republic News Agency of Iran on July 31, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi recently stated that the United States government should take concrete measures to establish trust in order to resume negotiations with Iran. If the US insists on Iran achieving “zero uranium enrichment,” it is unlikely for a deal to be reached.
The report mentioned that Salehi made these remarks during an interview with The Financial Times in the UK.
Salehi said that the deepening conflict between Iran and the United States has exacerbated Iran’s trust crisis with President Trump. “The United States must explain why it carried out attacks against Iran during negotiations and must ensure such incidents do not recur.”
Salehi expressed that he had recently exchanged views with Steven Wittkopf, the US Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, and informed the US side that to resolve the years-long deadlock around Iran’s nuclear program, a “win-win” solution should be sought.
He emphasized that although the path towards negotiations with the US is narrow, it is not impossible. “The US needs to take concrete measures to establish trust, including economic compensation and ensuring that no attacks are launched against Iran during the renegotiation process.”
Since April this year, there have been five rounds of indirect negotiations concerning the Iranian nuclear issue and the lifting of US sanctions on Iran. The sixth round was scheduled to take place on June 15 but was canceled due to an Israeli raid on Iran. During the military conflict between Iran and Israel, the US conducted airstrikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran.
