The meeting between U.S. and Russian leaders is set to begin at 22:30 Moscow time on the 15th (Beijing time on the 16th at 3:30 AM). On the 14th, Russia confirmed that the main part of the meeting would take place at a U.S. military base in Alaska. The “Putin-Trump” summit is drawing closer, with differing statements from both sides. Russian President Putin stated that the U.S. is actively working to end the conflict, while U.S. President Trump predicted a failure risk of 25% for the meeting, and once again mentioned the possibility of a tripartite meeting involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
“Putin and Zelensky will get along well”
On the 14th local time, U.S. President Trump stated in a speech at the White House that his meeting with Russian President Putin on the 15th would be a good one,
but more importantly, the upcoming second meeting.
He believes that Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky can get along well and achieve peace.
Trump said he would meet with Putin and Zelensky, possibly inviting some European leaders to join them as well.
Trump had mentioned earlier on the 13th that if the meeting with Putin goes smoothly, a second meeting would be held soon, during which Zelensky would be present.
“The risk of failure in the Putin meeting is 25%”
In an interview with Fox News on the 14th, Trump expressed that he believed Putin would reach an agreement. He also estimated the risk of failure in the meeting with Putin to be “25%.”
The meeting with Putin on the 15th will lay the groundwork for reaching an agreement in the second meeting, and if issues are not resolved, sanctions will be implemented. He mentioned that regarding border and land issues, it will be a process of mutual concessions.
Trump did not provide further explanations about “reaching an agreement,” “the second meeting,” or “sanctions.”
He stated that a post-meeting press conference would be held regardless, but whether it would be jointly organized was uncertain.
Russian Presidential Assistant Ushakov had mentioned earlier that the U.S. and Russian presidents would hold a joint press conference after the meeting.

Many U.S. Presidents have visited the military base
Several U.S. Presidents have made visits to this location.
In 2023, then-President Biden visited here for the 22nd anniversary of the “9/11” terrorist attack.
In 2019, during his first term, Trump stated that the troops stationed here “serve as the United States’ first line of defense at our nation’s last frontier.”
Analysts believe that for Trump, the military base was an excellent choice for hosting the U.S.-Russia summit, showcasing America’s military strength while preventing public or others from interfering in the fruitful dialogue he desired to achieve.
On the other hand, before the U.S.-Russia summit, meetings held by Europe, Ukraine, and the Trump administration revealed many important details.
Europe and Ukraine still insist on freezing the conflict and opposing any form of land swap for peace, as well as disagreeing with Russia’s proposed land exchange scheme. This shows their steadfast stance on the issue of territory, recognizing only the actual control lines between Russia and Ukraine, but not Russia’s ownership over new territories.
Furthermore, the Trump administration revealed the possibility of imposing tariffs on Russia. If a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine cannot be reached, the United States could still impose extreme tariffs on Russian energy, potentially devastating Russia’s economy. The U.S. hopes to maintain high pressure on Russia until a ceasefire is achieved between Russia and Ukraine to facilitate a ceasefire.
Thirdly, Ukraine and Europe still advocate for a secure peace. German Chancellor Merkel emphasized the need for a secure ceasefire agreement in Europe, demanding that the United States and Russia make corresponding commitments in terms of security and peace. Ukraine insists on continuing its membership in NATO, aiming for long-term post-war security through NATO membership.

Expert analysis suggests that Europe, Ukraine, the United States, and Russia clearly have significant disagreements over the issue of peace in Ukraine. Europe hopes to influence the Trump administration through dialogue with the United States, hoping for increased pressure from the US during negotiations to facilitate a solution favorable to Europe and Ukraine. In summary, achieving a significant breakthrough in peace within the short term is highly challenging.
