Hello everyone, let’s take a quick look at the latest news about Trump.
On August 16th, US President Donald Trump stated that considering the progress he made with Putin on the issue of the Ukraine war,
he currently has no plans to impose tariffs on Chinese products due to China’s purchase of Russian oil.
Trump said in an interview, “Due to what happened today, I don’t think I need to consider this matter now. Of course,
I may have to reconsider it in two or three weeks, but not now.
Earlier this month, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on countries that purchase Russian energy as a way to pressure Putin into starting peace negotiations with Ukraine. In response to India’s purchase of oil from Moscow, the United States has decided to increase tariffs on Indian products to 50% starting from August 27th.
However, imposing tariffs on China could potentially break the recently extended trade truce agreement between the two countries. On Monday, Trump agreed to extend the agreement for another 90 days. This agreement has reduced the tariffs between China and the United States, which soared to very high levels during the spring, thus mitigating the impact on the global market.
Although Trump did not reach a ceasefire agreement with Putin during their meeting in Alaska, he said that both sides agreed on many aspects and called on Ukrainian President Zelensky to reach an agreement with Putin.
Trump said in the interview, “I think the talks were very successful.”
On August 8th, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs answered a question.
Trump stated that he might impose secondary tariffs on China due to its purchase of Russian oil, but did not provide specific details. What is the comment of the Foreign Ministry on this?
China’s position on this issue is consistent and clear. China’s normal economic and trade cooperation with countries including Russia in energy is legitimate. We will continue to take reasonable energy security measures based on our national interests.
Trump’s tariff policy impacts the globe.
