On August 6th, local time, at the dawn in Tehran Prison in Iran, Ruzbeh Vadi ended his life on the gallows.
Vadi worked at the Iranian Nuclear Science and Technology Institute as a nuclear engineer. The Iranian authorities accused him of leaking Iran’s nuclear secrets to Israel, leading to the precise positioning and elimination of Iranian nuclear scientists in a military operation code-named “Operation Lion Power” launched by Israel in June this year.
Tehran, full of espionage, is playing a smokeless war…
Passing the loyalty test of Mossad
Vadi was an important member of Iran’s nuclear program. He completed all his studies in Iran: He graduated from Zanjian University in 2008, majoring in mechanical engineering; later entered Shahid Behesht University and studied nuclear engineering; and obtained his PhD in nuclear engineering at Amir Kabir University of Technology in 2016.

Vadi co-authored scientific research papers with famous Iranian nuclear scientists Abdul Hamid Minoushkar and Ahmad Zolfagari in 2011. Both nuclear scientists were killed in an assassination operation launched by Israel in June this year.
According to reports from Mizan News Agency, an Iranian judicial department news organization, Vadi began his espionage career in 2023 through a private message on the internet with the Israeli Intelligence and Special Operations Department (Mossad).
One day in 2023, a Mossad agent named Kevin sent a private message to Vadi. They got to know each other through this exchange.
It is reported that Vadi and Kevin set up a complete encrypted communication system online to pass messages secretly. In specific operations, Vadi, following the instructions, purchased a mobile phone, a laptop computer, and two flash drives. Mossad technicians then trained him through these devices and guided him to install a special communication system – this system could bypass Iran’s national firewall and had stable signals.
Vadi’s digital wallet received a fixed payment from Mossad every month. Vadi later mentioned in his confession that he initially suggested to Kevin that they send a summary of information weekly, but Mossad officials believed that Vadi must send all information to Kevin at once so that they could review and evaluate it.

Qin Tian analyzed that from the theft of Iran’s nuclear archives in 2018, the assassination of top nuclear scientists in 2020, to the continuous attacks on the Natanz nuclear facilities, and even the recent military action by Israel, these events exposed three systemic vulnerabilities in Iran: the continuous leakage of core secrets, the failure of security at critical sites, and the serious loss of border control. These vulnerabilities span across intelligence, border defense, security checks, and other departments, and cannot be repaired by capturing individual spies.
It will undoubtedly be a long-lasting war for Iran to clean up the Israeli spy network. Qin Tian believed that Israel’s infiltration model presented the characteristic of “human-technology coordination”, which not only placed human eyelines in key departments, but also relied on its technological advantages to implement multi-level penetration. This compound infiltration model further increased the difficulty of Iran’s defense, and Iran must adopt a systematic response strategy.
