On September 26, 2022, the “Nord Stream” pipeline, which transports Russian natural gas to Europe via the Baltic Sea, was damaged in an explosion, resulting in a massive leak of natural gas.
On the 21st local time, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office issued a notice stating that, in accordance with the European arrest warrant issued by the German Federal Supreme Court’s investigating judge, Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian man in the Rimini Province, Italy, who is suspected of being involved in the “Nord Stream” natural gas pipeline explosion.
According to the notice, this man, named Serhiy K, is considered to be one of the coordinators of the 2022 “Nord Stream-1” and “Nord Stream-2” pipeline explosion cases. German prosecutors stated that Serhiy K and his associates placed an explosive device near Bornholm Island in the Baltic Sea in September 2022. The relevant personnel traveled from Rostock, Germany, using a sailboat rented through falsified identity documents to the incident sea area, and installed explosives underwater by divers.
On September 26, 2022, the explosion caused severe damage to the “Nord Stream” pipeline. According to the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office, Serhiy K is charged with jointly creating the explosion, engaging in activities that undermine the constitutional order, and damaging infrastructure. The German prosecutor will seek to extradite him to Germany and transfer him to the Federal Court for trial.
On September 26, 2022, the Baltic Sea underwater pipelines “Nord Stream-1” and “Nord Stream-2” connecting Russia with Germany and other European countries experienced violent explosions near Denmark and Sweden, resulting in a massive leak of natural gas. The investigation found that three of the four pipelines had leaked, suspected of being deliberately destroyed by humans. After the incident, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany launched investigations but refused Russia’s participation. In February 2024, Sweden and Denmark announced the end of their investigations, while Germany stated that it would continue its investigation. (Reported by CCTV’s Ruan Jiaxiu and Li Yaoqiang)
