On August 20th, local time, a federal judge in the United States ordered Musk to respond to a class action lawsuit involving a “million-dollar lottery”.
Jacqueline McCafferty, a voter in Arizona, filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of others, accusing Musk and his created “American Political Action Committee” of falsely inducing her to provide personal identifying information in the aftermath of the 2024 election.
She stated that Musk and his “American Political Action Committee” promised to randomly select a winner of $1 million like in a lottery to attract voters from seven swing states to sign petitions. However, voters did not actually have the opportunity to receive the $1 million, and their submitted names, addresses, emails, and phone numbers were used for political data collection.
The case has been filed in a court in Texas.
In October 2024, Musk held a “million-dollar lottery” online for voters in “swing states” to support Trump in the U.S. presidential election. He randomly selected a voter who participated in his petition campaign each day and awarded them $1 million without charge. On October 28th of the same year, Krasner, a Philadelphia-area prosecutor and Democrat, filed a lawsuit against Musk and the “American Political Action Committee,” accusing them of illegally operating a lottery to try to influence the presidential election.
