On August 21th local time, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris made a speech through the Sudan News Agency and Sudan National Television that the top priority of the new Sudanese government is to achieve peace.
Idris expressed that achieving peace is a priority for the government, and the door for dialogue is open, but the Sudan government will not accept any imposed peace. He also said that another major responsibility of the government is to ensure the basic public service needs of the people. He emphasized that “citizens first” is the principle of the new government, and government agencies are expected to return to the capital Khartoum to work by the end of October or November this year.
On May 19th this year, Burhan, Chairman of the Sudan Sovereign Committee and Chief of the Armed Forces, issued an order to appoint Idris as prime minister. Idris was sworn in as prime minister on May 31st in Port Sudan, an eastern city in Sudan, becoming the first prime minister since October 2021.
On April 15th, 2023, there was an armed conflict between Sudan Armed Forces and Sudan Rapid Support Forces in the capital Khartoum, and the fighting subsequently spread to other areas. The more than two-year armed conflict has killed nearly 30,000 people and displaced more than 12 million people. After the outbreak of the conflict, most of Sudan’s federal government agencies moved from Khartoum to Port Sudan. (By Zhao Fangyuan, CCTV)
