On August 22nd, local time, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced at a press conference in Ottawa, the capital, that Canada has decided to cancel many retaliatory tariffs on American goods, but will temporarily maintain tariffs on American cars, steel, and aluminum. He emphasized that these measures were in response to the reduction of tariffs on Canadian goods by the United States.

The day before, Trudeau had a conversation with U.S. President Trump about tariff wars and other international issues. On the same day, Canadian Foreign Minister Anand met with U.S. Secretary of State Rubio in Washington, sending a signal to resolve the tariff war.

Earlier this month, Trudeau had suggested that if it helped Canadian industries survive the tariff war with the United States, he might cancel retaliatory tariffs on some goods.

On July 31st, Trump signed an executive order to increase tariffs on some Canadian goods to 35%, which went into effect at midnight on August 1st. However, this tariff did not include products covered by the USMCA. Since the outbreak of the tariff war, the Canadian government has imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods three times, including tariffs on US$60 billion worth of American goods and additional tariffs on American cars.
